the kids who organized this . . .
the kids who are going to vote . . .
the kids who are coming after the establishment . . .
they make me more optimistic than I have been in a long, old-crabby-lady time.

The old selfish minds must go. Obstructive reactionaries must move on. The young are at the gates! - Lavinia Dock, The Suffragist, June 30, 1917.

i have hope because of these kids
Me too!
What bothers me is that this is all too easy. The FBI fails to follow up (perhaps) on warning about the shooter. Trump almost immediately jumps in to back a ban on bump stocks at a minimum. One of the Kushner boys is at a march. Former Justice Stevens calls for getting outright rid of the 2nd Amendment.
Does anyone else seem surprised that there is a sudden, extremely well organized and publicized supposed grass roots effort that aims to make most guns illegal? ...because, with the man who would be King in office doesn't it all seem very convenient? As the gun nuts say again and again, no dictator has ever wanted an armed citizenry.
Just sayin'
Great Comment!
I think you are right in that there is a whole bunch going on and the answer isn’t simple. My semi-disagreement with your assessment is assigning motivation. The “grassroots movement” has been building since the Columbine shooting in ‘99. People are pissed, more so than they have ever been except possibly during the Vietnam war. I’m actually surprised the momentum behind change hasn’t happened earlier.
Our governmental forces appear to be more Keystone Kops than 007 evil underground lair. I could be wrong and if I wanted to destroy a democracy for fun and for profit, arranging for a buffoon to be elected president would be a good step. However, per Occam’s razor, I put that on Putin.
My disagreement with your assessment is aligning the aim of the effort “to make most guns illegal” for some deeper nefarious purpose. Airport screening, speed limits, drinking age, censorship on profane speech, exotic pet restrictions - there are a myriad of behaviors that are regulated.
It is reasonable to protect school kids, concert goers, and holiday shoppers from being shot. It is reasonable to have the opportunity to be heard and to influence elected government and it is reasonable to vote them out if they favor special interest over constituents.
Assigning a goal to a group is counter to a reasonable dialog.
Thank you for reading the post and thank you for commenting.
NRA, Putin, buffoonery, career politicians, social media exploitation - let me know what you think!
