Franklin, one of the most cosmopolitan of the Founding Fathers, strategically arrived in France dressed as an adventurer and backwoodsman. Jefferson, who was already in France attempting to arrange for military assistance, was handsome, sophisticated, and well-coiffed. Franklin, reportedly without his younger friend's knowledge, played off the differences in appearance and endeared the French to ideas of vast romantic wilderness and rugged individualism. I'm thinking, while our republic is on the precipice of becoming a kleptocracy, it would be great if Franklin could dust off the fur cap and head over to Paris again.
