Space Invaders

Space Invaders was released in Japan in 1978.  It was so popular that specialty arcades opened with no other games.

In the first year, over 100,000 machines had grossed over $600 million in Japan alone. By 1981, the game grossed $1 billion.

In the first year home console games were offered, two million units were sold.

The National Space Invaders Championship sponsored by Atari in 1980. The tournament drew over 10,000 contestants.
