Kennedy and Nixon talking after the second televised debate. |
Remember when politicians had the good manners to at least ATTEMPT a cover up of their criminal deeds?
"This is a generation weaned on Watergate, and there is no presumption of innocence and no presumption of good intentions. Instead, there is a presumption that, without relentless scrutiny, the government will misbehave." - Margaret Jane "Dee Dee" Myers, political analyst
When politicians assumed most Americans had some level of intellect and morals and took steps to circumvent immediate outrage?
"A few months ago, I told the American people I did not trade arms for hostages. My heart and my best intentions still tell me that's true, but the facts and evidence tell me it is not." - Ronald Reagan, admitting the Iran-Contra Affair, March 1987
So what happened?
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." - William Casey CIA Director, in a 1981 meeting where Regan asked him to define his goal.
Misplaced optimism?
A national slide into apathy?
Acceptance of inevitable political corruption?

Dicks - everyone knows one. |
Not only does everyone know at least one, but we apparently keep voting for them.
"The good Lord didn't see fit to put oil and gas only where there are democratic regimes friendly to the United States. . . . But, we go where the business is." - Dick Cheney
Has political hubris and hypocrisy exponentially increased or are other presidencies just better at hiding human rights violations for political and financial gain?
Dick Cheney's companies made $39,500,000,000 on taxpayer money in a war that has killed over 1.5 million people and was started on a purposeful, calculated lie.
Fast and the Furious, illegal NSA activities, the Veterans Health Administration debacle and utilizing the IRS as a retaliatory terrorist branch of the US government, to name a few.
"A few weeks ago Dick Cheney said he thinks I’m the worst president of his lifetime, which is interesting because I think Dick Cheney is the worst president of my lifetime." - Barack Obama.
But there is something especially disturbing about this particular Dick.
Don't you think?
"I’m going to end on a note of gratitude - something I never thought that I would say. George W. Bush, thank you for not dying while you were in office." - Jon Stewart
