What Role do I Want Modeled?

First Miss America, 1921

A few pageant questions answered by our self-proclaimed, female “Role Models!?!”  Be afraid! Be very afraid.

“Miss America represents the highest ideals. She is a real combination of beauty, grace, and intelligence, artistic and refined. She is a type which the American Girl might well emulate.” From the Miss America web site

Miss Ohio 2012, Audrey Bolte:
“Do you think women are depicted in movies and on television in an accurate and positive way?"

"I think it depends on the movie. I think there are some movies that depict women in a very positive role, and then some movies that put them in a little bit more of a negative role. But by the end of the movie they show that 'woman power' that I know we all have, such as the movie Pretty Woman. We had a wonderful beautiful woman, Julia Roberts, and she was having a rough time. But, you know what, she came out on top, and she didn't let anybody stay in her path."

Oh honey. Really? A hooker?  Granted a hooker with a heart of gold and no pimp and not on drugs? You might want to expand your movie watching experience. Maybe I'm wrong and we should introduce pole dancing in sixth grade.

Miss Philippines contestant 2001, Jeanie Anderson:
"Would you rather be more smart, or more beautiful?”

“Well, I’d rather choose to be beautiful, um because, to be beautiful it’s natural. But being smart you can learn… you can learn, um a lot of things."

This may be a little hard to follow, but I'll go slow.  Wrong answer. Do you remember what the other answer was?  Not more beautiful, so more . . ?  Well I can see how it would be confusing because it is a really dumb question. Here is a hint, choose smart.

Miss Utah 2013, Marissa Powell:

“A recent report shows that in 40 percent of American families with children, women are the primary earners yet they continue to earn less than men. What does this say about society?”

“I think we can relate this back to education, and how we are … continuing to try to strive to [epic pause] figure out how to create jobs right now. That is the biggest problem. And I think, especially the men are … um … seen as the leaders of this, and so we need to try to figure out how to create educate better so we can solve this problem. Thank you.”

Leave the "educate" to the professionals.

Miss South Carolina 2007, Catlin Upton
“Why is it that some Americans can’t locate the United States on a world map?”

“I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so, because, some people out there in our nation don’t have maps, and I believe that our education like such as South Africa and the Iraq , everywhere, like, such as, and I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., er should help South Africa, and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future.”

This is why "the Iraq" did not take America seriously.

Miss Hawaii 1992, Nadine Tanega:
"Why are you proud to be an American?"

"We are truly the land of the great,” she said. “From the rocky shores of ... Hawaii ... to the beautiful sandy beaches of ... Hawaii ... America is our home.”

The host replied appropriately: “That’s a wonderfully versatile state you got there.”
