THE Birthday Month was coming up (see the March in March Matron) and the 11-year-old and I decided to go to Brookings Oregon.
I underestimated the drive and after finding a great dinner, a Bate’s Family type motel and driving through “a whole lot o' nothin' ” we turned south instead of north and went to Crescent City California.
The redwoods were amazing. We found a great little motel right on the water inlet. The 11-year-old played in the sand and I found a fabulous thrift store. After rummaging through boxes of stuff, I had piled up what I thought was $200 worth of old books, buttons, and dishes. It turned out to be just over $25. Thank you, The Purple Cat!!
We finished the day off at a wonderful sandwich shop and sat out on the little deck, watching the lights on the water, the kid and I wrapped in a big quilt. It was perfect! Perfect until 4 a.m. when the local Sherriff pounded on the motel door.
The city was evacuating with the Tsunami warning. We found our way out after several wrong turns, two helpful brothers, a big pickup truck and a winch. (Don’t ask!) Leave it to me to go on a Tsunami vacation.

Sounds lovely, except for the tsunami and all.
