On August 23, 1999, was launched by Pyra Labs, which I had, unfortunately, no part of developing. 

One of the earliest dedicated blog-publishing tools, it is credited for helping popularize the format. In February 2003, Pyra Labs was acquired by Google, which I also had, unfortunately, no part of developing.

The purchase amount was not disclosed but posted on Quora:

I was on the Pyra Labs team and we never disclosed the amount of the acquisition. The only hint I can share is that at the time we were wrestling with Google over their valuation which was somewhere between $1B and $3B at the time.

By 2008 a new blog was created every second leaving the internet with an additional 31,536,000 blog options per year.

Tumblr was created in 2007. Five years later it was sold to Yahoo for $1.1 Billion.
There are currently 335 microblogs and more than 53 million posts per day.

The White House blog debuted in 2009, with the current POTUS choosing to communicate by other electronic means. 

Know that the Internet has no eraser. - Liz Strauss was created in January 2007 by Eric "Cheezburge" Nakagawa. Focused on animal internet memes it had 1.5 million hits a day by May 2017. Investors bought the blog in September 2007 for $2 million.
8 months, cat memes and $2 million. 

That's nothing compared to Forbes list of "Wildly Successful Blogs.", a blog about search engine optimization, generates $4,250,000 per month from membership fees and venture capital., a gadget review and advice blog was purchased by AOL in 2005 and brings in $5,500,000 per month.

Arriana Huffington started Huffington Post in 2005. She sold the blog in 2011 to AOL for $315 million. HuffPost makes $14,000,000 per month and is valued at well over $1 billion. 
AND Trump doesn't like it.

Gawker, created in 2003 as "the source for daily Manhattan media news and gossip" was known for violating copyrights and privacy.  In 2010, they were hacked for their "outright arrogance" and a database dump with confidential and proprietary information was made available online. 

Gawker Media shut down the site in 2016 after publishing the Hulk Hogan sex tape, subsequent lawsuit and filing for bankruptcy. 

In China, blogs enable millions of citizens to express their opinions with reduced political risk simply because of the sheer number of like-minded opinions online. Facing these independent voices, the old ideological machine starts to crumble. - Xiao Qiang

In 2002, a blogger flurry focused on U.S. Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott's ridiculously effusive praise for racist U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond. Ultimately Lott was forced to resign

Malala was initially targeted by the Taliban when they uncovered the 12-year-old's identity as the 2009 blogger describing life under Taliban occupation. 

In Azerbaijan, criminal defamation laws restrict online speech. Alexander Lapshin is a travel blogger based in Moscow with dual Russian-Israeli citizenship. 
He blogged "Reading their media gives the impression that the Azerbaijani authorities and journalists believe their own people to be morons." 
A warrant for his arrest was issued for entering the territory illegally and he is currently being held in Minsk. If he is deported back to Azerbaijan he faces 13 years in prison. 

Readers subscribe to blogs when they provide an informational or entertainment value so great that it would be a loss to not subscribe to it. - Maki
