Outsourcing – It’s the American Way!

I wonder if the clothes in China say Made around the corner.
In a desperate act to avoid doing anything domestic, I watched The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful. It was one of those DVDs from Netflix that sort of kick around for a few weeks while you decide if you want to carve out a few hours or just send it back. So one afternoon, pile of laundry or popcorn and DVD. (Admit it, you’ve been there too.)
In a nut shell, a group of British retirees (Dame Judi Dench, the fabulous M to Mr. Bond, Maggie Smith, the head of Gryffindor and Tom Wilkinson and Bill Nighy, character actors that make you nuts trying to remember what else they’ve been in) decide to move to India because they can’t afford to retire in London.
The point is, yes I’m coming to it, a quote from the hotel owner, "I have a dream to outsource old age. There are lots of places besides Britain that don’t like the old age, too."
Ingenious! The locals make some money, the seniors have more buying power with their shrinking pensions and the families back at home don’t have to look at, talk to, or invite Nana to dinner anymore.
Well, it’s better than the Soylent Green option and I’ve worked in the field too long to have any faith in our retirement safety net.
I would recommend the movie and if you like it, try Calendar Girls.
"I'm gay - although nowadays more in theory than in practice."
"You're not worried about the danger of having sex at your age?" (Reply)"If she dies, she dies."
"It's our 40th anniversary, we haven't decided quite how to mark it."(Reply) "Perhaps a minute of silence."
"Everything will be all right in the end... if it's not all right then it's not yet the end."
