We hardly ever had any “good” food in the house; no chips, no cookies, no sugary cereals. We did have plenty of produce and tofu and whole grain everything but that’s not what we defined as “good.” My mom would ask, “What do you wish we had?” “Pop tarts?” “No. Something that isn’t garbage.” One year, for Christmas, I wrapped up a box full of chips and candy and sugar cereal and gave it to my mom.
We did, for some reason, have cans and cans of Mandarin Oranges, Spaghetti O’s and Vienna Sausages. An interesting combination with very limited possibilities.
